Sometimes readers wonder, “Do you have a schedule of when to write about certain things?” An then I say, “Nope; my mood tells me what to write about and when.”
But if you’re unlike me and would like an actual schedule of what to post, officially known as an “Editorial Calendar” or “Ed Cal” for short, then I may have just found what you’re looking for: a nifty Ed Cal template created by Michele from Scraps of My Life.
EdCals aren’t helpful just to the writer; sure, they help you determine what to write about and thus prevent the mental blocks that accompany not having any idea of what to write about. Ed Cals also help those interested in partnering with you (for business opportunities such as product reviews, giveaways, etc.) know what to present to you and when.
As someone who’s been in the media environment, I’ve come to realize that ed cals are usually more helpful for the bigger, more established blogs–the kinds that don’t have the time to review perhaps irrelevant or untimely product pitches. (I.e., the kinds that write about, say, cold remedies only in February, new shows only in October, … you get the picture.)
The smaller, less popular blogs, I think, thrive on their randomness. (Or at least a really basic outline of what to write about and when–say you’d only do product giveaways on Wednesdays or blogging tips on Wednesdays.) But either way, I see Ed Cals as valuable (though non-required in case you were wondering) tools that will help anyone enhance the look of their blog. And I might develop my own in the future, who knows.
So how about you, do you have an Ed Cal? If so, what made you decide to create one? If now, would you consider creating one and why?
