Aside from growing up knowing that Brazil was the king of soccer, and later on discovering that football, golf, and car races are rather BORING, I never knew much about sports. I may work out often and be able to hold a semi-intelligent conversation about swimming and tennis, but I really don’t know AS much as those other sport-savvy girls that the guys supposedly love to hang with.
So I often wondered whether I was missing out: could not knowing about sports be hurting my chances to meet new guys? Should I become more fluent in sportspeak?
I know that technically guys want us gals to be ourselves. If we know “0” about sports, then so be it! They like us to be dedicated to whatever we love, because they (at least those who are normal) like us to have our own lives and passions. If we want to be the world authority on, say, worms (um.. sure, why not?) then the guy meant for us (who may or may not be a HUGE sports fan) will like that about us.
But it wasn’t until I watched last week’s episode of New Girl that I became absolutely convinced that not knowing about sports is perfectly fine because I can still be MYSELF.

In this episode, two of Jess’s (straight male*) roommates are celebrating their tenth anniversary of living together. (*I add this clarification b/c there’s a joke about this fact on that episode.) At their party, Jess begins to flirt w/Jax, a big-time football player she had met through Winston, another of her roommates, who had interviewed him for the radio station he works at. But Winston wanted Jax, on whom he had like a guy-crush, as his friend only–not as Jess’s boyfriend.
Which is how this awesome exchange (pictured above) originated:
Winston: [You can’t get him because] You know nothing about sports!
Jess: Ugh what am I gonna have to do? I guess I’ll have to use my eyes, hair, boobs, legs, and adorable personality… Haha. Fool.
So you know what? Screw not knowing (a whole lot) about sports. I’ll just stick to being myself and studying/knowing what I love and am genuinely passionate about.
Lastly, as a completely random side-note, check out what our week’s looked like AND what we’ll be expecting this weekend:
It’s been updated a bit since I took this pic, but it was nevertheless SO PERFECT!!
Now what have YOU thought you “needed” to know/have in order to “get” a guy (but later realized you really didn’t)?
As always, have a beautiful and blessed weekend!
